From 1 to 17 March 2026, Saitama University conducted a COIL + Global PBL programme for science and engineering students at its partner institution, Kasetsart University in Thailand. The programme was organised as part of the course “AL2 (COIL + Overseas Short-Term Programme)” coordinated by Associate Professor Takako Ochi of the Office of International Affairs. It combined Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) with overseas field-based learning as a blended international collaborative education programme.
Under the theme of “Climate Change,” mixed Japanese–Thai student teams investigated urban flooding and environmental challenges in Bangkok through field surveys and data analysis focusing on topography, drainage systems, green infrastructure, and transportation.
A key feature of the programme was the use of the TAG-FLOW model developed by Professor Akihiko Wakai of Gunma University to analyse the relationship between flooding and green infrastructure. Students engaged in project-based learning (PBL) to develop practical solutions to climate-related urban challenges.
